I teach representational (realist) drawing, starting with a block-in, using charcoal on paper. My private lessons for adults are online and conducted via Zoom, and in-person at my studio. Please contact me if you are interested. I’m in the US, eastern time zone.

My on-demand video class, Introduction to Drawing, is a condensed version of my live Introduction to Drawing lessons, and allows you to learn at your convenience.

PRIVATE LESSONS FOR ADULTS

INTRODUCTION TO DRAWING, SIX LESSON COURSE (Online Working from photo references, or in person working from life)

In this course will introduce you to concepts and skills which are important for learning to draw. My drawing lessons won’t turn you into an expert draftsperson — that takes dedication and lots of practice — but you will learn how to interpret and draw what you see.

The lessons focus on concepts needed for drawing in a realist manner from observation using black charcoal on white paper. By drawing simple still lifes you will work on translating and rendering three dimensional space into two dimensions and onto paper. We start with drawing a block-in and finding form and cast shadows, continue on to utilizing negative space, and then to understanding simple visual perspective.

During each lesson I demonstrate and lecture. After your lesson, in an email, you will be given notes, information about your next lesson, and optional homework in the form of suggested drawing practice and reading from the book, Lessons in Classical Drawing, by Juiliette Aristedes.

PORTRAIT DRAWING FOR ADULTS (Working from photo references)

I offer classical portrait drawing from reference photos for students already versed in drawing. Portrait students use black charcoal, but also eventually use white charcoal along with the black on toned paper. These lessons are focused on skill building.

STILL LIFE DRAWING LESSONS (Working from photo references online and from Life in Person)

I offer classical still life drawing for students already versed in drawing. Students work on drawing increasingly difficult objects and still life set-ups. Still life students use black charcoal, but also eventually begin using white charcoal along with the black on toned paper. These lessons are focused on skill building.

Lessons for Children

I am not currently working with children.

General Information

I give online, private drawing lessons using black charcoal on white paper on Thursdays and Fridays via Zoom, and in-person at my studio in Ann Arbor, Michigan.

Right now I have open lesson times on both Thursdays and Fridays.

Lessons are generally weekly and one hour long.

In-persons are done standing or sitting at an easel. For online lessons, you are welcome to draw at an easel, on paper taped to a wall, etc.; however you are comfortable working, and in a way which allows you to point your video streaming device at your drawing.

Pricing and Payment For All Drawing Lessons

Lessons are $70.00 per hour online and $80.00 in-person and can be paid for via ApplePay or PayPal.

Cancelling a Scheduled Lesson

If you need to cancel a lesson, I ask you let me know as soon as possible, but at least one day in advance. If you cancel or miss a lesson for any reason other than illness on the same day of your lesson, I ask you pay for that missed lesson.
