October 2016

I hung Nothing But Blue Skies in the Ann Arbor Art Center’s Aquarium Gallery on October 9. This sculpture is approximately 6 x 6 x 2.5 feet and is made of wood, wire, mono filament, gesso, ink, Molotow Urban Fine Art spray paint, blue LED bulbs and a fan. It will be up until mid-November.

I'll take better night photos soon, but this image gives an idea of the murky blue light that floods the space at night.

December 4

Natural Notations, a solo exhibition of my work has opened at River Centre Gallery in Sylvania, Ohio. The show will be up until January 8, 2016. Most of the work included in the show is from my new Bird Hills series.

About this exhibition:

Nearly all of the works on paper and sculptures in this exhibit are derived from observations and photographs of Bird Hills Nature Area, the urban park near my current Ann Arbor, Michigan home, as well as my memories of the landscape of rural Minnesota where I grew up. As I worked on the studies for the Bird Hills series, certain themes emerged, such as patterns based on the detritus left behind by the movement of water, and the marks left on the landscape by man, but mostly I found myself thinking about trees. My interpretations of those trees are in many of the works here: abstractions of single trees, groves and forests; symbolic trees in larger, chaotic landscapes; and sticks and branches in my sculptures. Even though the trees in Bird Hills are deciduous, such as beech, dogwood, oak and maple, the tree that I found myself drawing most often was the one I remember from the north, the tamarack. I’ve always loved the tamarack for its oddness. Needles that turn yellow and fall off in fall, a propensity to shed its own branches in order to grow tall and reach for the sun, its yellow or maroon flowers, and tiny pink pinecones that turn brown as they grow. That it lives in bogs and can end up ragged and ugly as it ages — with all that branch dropping — just seems to make it all the more charming.
