STATEMENT

My process-based, traditional artwork is rooted in drawing, and combines traditional explorations of color, shape, surface and scale with expressive line work. I follow an inner, personal narrative, and allow the artworks to evolve over time. This work is inspired by the color field and Postwar gestural painters, and is fueled by my natural curiosity and feelings of awkwardness and isolation. Currently I am focusing on creating drawings and paintings which can be 'read’ as intimate, mysterious personal poems and missives.

I’m also contemplating the idea of beauty by creating imagery that is reminiscent of classical painting with artificial intelligence. This serendipitous, textual process can render lovely, if sometimes unsettling artworks. I curate the artworks, but do not aesthetically manipulate them.

My photography projects are extremely personal and focus on storytelling with expression, body language and landscape imagery. In my ongoing photographic self-portrait project, Re(Act), I endeavor to create a sense of awkward intimacy while communicating an inner turmoil which I hide from others under a veil of patience and calm. With the rural midwest photographs of Comet I seek to portray an everyplace and a no-place; an uncertain, overlooked, middle.
